English Crop Circles of 2007

The crop circle season of 2007, despite being the wettest summer since records began in England, had 51 formations, 39 of which were in Wiltshire. For those new to the subject, the study of crop circles started in 1980 and much data has been accumulated in various databases since then. It is a big subject and the number of accessible recorded designs from 1980 onwards is now well over 6,000. There are no repeats, only continuation on themes over the years. The designs are decipherable through their geometry, mathematics and references to ancient symbology.

They are found in crops and any other vegetation, as well as in sand, earth, ice and snow, all over the world but England is still the most active area. A lot of research has been conducted to understand the cause of this phenomenon, the effect it is having on plants and soil and the meaning encoded in the designs. It is not possible to explore all these aspects in a small introduction such as this, but suffice it to say that in spite of twenty years of disinformation by the media, it has continued unabated and the complexity of the designs has carried on evolving. Every year formations are found all over the country and indeed beyond England in other lands.

What could be more beguiling than these majestic designs sitting so gracefully in fields of grain in beautiful landscapes? We are all moved by their beauty and after a while the realisation that their designs could be meaningful starts to dawn on most people, but we are very much at the receiving end and can only try to follow the lines of thought. Every now and then an event happens that acts as a quantum leap in our understanding.

On the 7th of July this summer (7-7-07), a UFO investigator was doing a night-watch at Knapp Hill overlooking the East Field which is famous for its number of crop circles over the years. He had brought several cameras with him, some with infra-red capacities, and before long he was joined by two crop circle researchers. Together they watched the field for any sign of activity. They saw none, heard no sound nor did the cameras pick up any suspicious lights. At 3.13am, at the darkest time of night before dawn, when the tapes of the cameras were almost due to be changed, a silent flash of light, lasting a mere four milliseconds, briefly illuminated the valley. A few minutes later, looking through the infra-red camera, the outline of a large formation, over 1,000ft in length, could be seen in the field below.

It has been known for many years that the formation of crop circles causes the living cells of the plants in which they appear to heat and swell up and affects the soil to a large degree. Based on these observations, scientists have concluded that crop circles happen very rapidly, otherwise the level of heat generated by their formation would incinerate the fields, especially at the end of the summer when wheat has turned to straw. We think this is what happened on the night of 7th July and it is very rare that anyone is nearby at such an event.

Altogether summer 2007 was a great season and we think you will agree that the formations were all staggeringly beautiful and worthy of being recorded for posterity.
